How To Make Delicious French Toast Without Vanilla

French toast is a firm favorite breakfast dish among many. Some of us have very sweet tooths, and we don’t want to have eggs and bacon for breakfast. This is where French toast comes in handy. This is my favorite French toast recipe without vanilla extract. It’s easy French toast.

We love French toast, and we often make the French toast in our home with pure vanilla extract. However, there are many different reasons people may not want to use vanilla extract. For one thing, it has alcohol in it, and there are an equal number of reasons some people prefer to avoid alcohol.

Also, pure vanilla extract is quite expensive. While imitation vanilla is slightly cheaper, it’s a little on the pricey side as well (and not nearly as delicious). The good news is that you can make delicious French toast even if you don’t want to use vanilla. What is even better about French toast is how easy it is to prepare and make! You are bound to have a few of its ingredients lying around, and can rustle up this delicious breakfast dish in just a few moments!

The only problem is that in most cases, French toast recipes call for a little vanilla extract, which you may not always have handy.

French toast is a classic breakfast dish enjoyed by many. Its delightful combination of flavors and textures has made it a household favorite in various cultures. However, the traditional French toast recipe often calls for one particular ingredient: vanilla. While vanilla is known to enhance the flavor of this breakfast staple, some people might want to explore new ways to prepare this well-loved dish without it.

By opting for a French toast recipe without vanilla, both kitchen enthusiasts and busy individuals can discover a unique take on this timeless treat. The absence of vanilla allows for more creativity with other ingredients, emphasizing different flavors or customizing the dish to cater to specific dietary preferences or restrictions.

This is why we have created a simple, easy to follow guide of how to make French toast without vanilla.

This French toast tastes just as good, just as sweet and smells mouth wateringly good with a sprinkling of cinnamon and a splash of maple syrup!

What Is French Toast?

French Toast is a popular breakfast sweet treat enjoyed by many across the globe. French Toast is typically served as sliced bread soaked in beaten eggs and milk, then pan fried in butter.

In most recipes, French Toast is then topped with cinnamon or powdered sugar for a sweet serving of food. You may be surprised to find that French toast is not a new dish, and has been enjoyed since the Roman Empire! Although toppings and serving suggestions may have changed over the years, the recipe has remained basically the same. However, despite its name, French toast did not originate in France itself. The origins of the dish is relatively unknown, yet examples can be found in many different places in Europe, including Germany, France, Italy and many others.

The sweetness of the bread, and its popularity across Europe is what gave this breakfast dish its name of French toast, although it is known by many other terms across the world such as eggy bread, gypsy toast or even Bombay toast. In the states, French Toast is an incredibly popular dish, especially in Creole cuisine in places such as New Orleans.

In New Orleans, French toast is referred to as pain perdu and is most often served as a breakfast dish with lots of syrup, honey or powdered sugar. It is this style of French toast that most people enjoy, and love to make for themselves! If French toast sounds like it may be your style, then you will need to know exactly what makes this dish so special. One of our favorite things about French toast is how easy it is to personalize to your own tastes.

You can change up the bread, mix up the toppings, or even serve the toast in finger slices for a quick snack if you wanted to. If you are ready to try French toast for yourself, then you need to know all of the best tips and tricks, what bread is best, and which toppings to have!

Best French Toast Toppings

One of the best things about French Toast is that you can put anything you like on top of it! You can really customize this breakfast staple with any of your favorite toppings, to cater to your taste buds.

We love traditional French Toast served up with a little syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar and a little cinnamon, and it smells truly delicious!

However, there are a number of different French Toast toppings that you can try, such as:

  • Whipped cream
  • Nutella and strawberries
  • Nutella and bananas
  • Jam or jellies
  • Fresh berries
  • Bananas and nuts
  • Peaches and ice cream
  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate sauce

Best Types of Bread for French Toast

If you want to make the perfect French toast, as if it is fresh out of New Orleans, then you will want to ensure that you have all the right ingredients to do so. This means having the perfect toppings, and the best types of bread. The best types of bread for french toast tend to be thicker sliced, as they hold up better inside the skillet when cooking. If you use thin slices of bread, then they may be prone to breaking when soaking in the french toast mixture, and can fall apart once thrown in the pan. However, generally speaking, any type of bread can work well for French Toast. You can use white, brown, wheat or multigrain bread, depending on your preferences. That being said, most people prefer to use brioche bread, or challah bread as the flavors really complement the sweetness of the recipe.

Our favorite choice for french toast is potato bread as this is also sweet, and makes for a delicious treat when combined with the mixture.

How to Substitute Vanilla in French Toast

In most common French Toast recipes, you will notice that vanilla extract is included in them.

However, this is not entirely necessary, and sometimes it can be hard to come by in your kitchen cupboards if you are not an avid baker. The good thing is that vanilla is only a subtle flavor, and is not completely necessary to making French Toast. This is why we have substituted it with maple syrup in our recipe, which you can find here:

and added a little cinnamon for a sweet, tasty touch:

Vanilla extract often comes in a very small bottle, which can run out extremely quickly and easily, so the last thing you want is to run out of it when making your French Toast, and thinking that you can’t have your favorite sweet breakfast staple.

This is why we have created a recipe for delicious, traditional French Toast, without the vanilla!

How to Make French Toast Without Vanilla

If you are ready to make your own New Orleans style french toast for yourself, then all you need to do is follow this step by step guide, and simple recipe. The first step is to gather all of your ingredients. For this recipe to work, you will need 6 slices of bread, 2 large eggs, ¼ cup of milk, ¼ cup of heavy cream, 1 teaspoon of syrup, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

Once you have all of your ingredients, all you need to do then is to grab a small, shallow bowl, and whisk together the heavy cream, eggs, milk, sugar, syrup and pinch of ground cinnamon. Using a whisk, or a fork, simply whisk these ingredients together until they are combined completely. Then, you are going to want to grease a large skillet with some butter, or a little cooking oil, depending on which you prefer, and place the skillet over a medium high heat. Once hot, you can then soak each slice of bread on both sides within the mixture that you have just made, ensuring that the bread is covered completely. Next, transfer the soaked bread into the skillet and cook on both sides until it is golden brown in color.Repeat this process for each piece of bread, and make sure that you add more butter or cooking oil to the skillet before adding a new slice.
