One of the easiest methods to make morning pancakes is with pancake mix. This is a simple, quick and effective way to make some delicious, flavorful pancakes whenever you want them!
The only problem is, with pancake mix, sometimes your pancakes can feel a little lacking in quality, or are not as thick or fluffy as homemade ones.
Don’t worry, usually it is not your culinary skills that are the problem, most of the time it is the manufactured pancake mix that can be the issue. Luckily, we know exactly how to tackle it, and how to make the perfect fluffy pancakes, with pancake mix.
What Is In Pancake Mix?
You may be wondering what exactly is in pancake mix, and how this differs from normal homemade pancakes.
Typically speaking, pancake mix is made with enriched bleached flour, salt, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, some sort of leavening agent such as baking powder, and dextrose.
These may sound like nasty ingredients if you do not know exactly what they are, so we are going to explain them.
Dextrose for example, is just a form of sugar, like glucose. Dextrose is added to pancake mixture just to ensure that it is sweet enough for you to enjoy. In addition, pancake mixture contains a little salt, just to keep the dextrose in balance.
Finally, partially hydrogenated soybean oil is a type of trans fat, which is not very good for your health, so try to find a pancake box without this if possible. Let’s be honest, pancakes are not healthy either!
How To Make Fluffy Pancakes With Pancake Mix
With a few of our tips, we will have you making fluffy pancakes like a pro. Just make sure you follow a few of our recommendations, and you should be good to go! One of the best pieces of advice we can give you when making pancakes with pancake mix is to sift the pancake mix.
This is so that the dry ingredients from the box get more air into them, through a process called aerating. Therefore, you are going to need to sift out all of the dry ingredients from the box before you do anything else, for the fluffiest pancakes.
In addition, if your pancake mix box says just add water, just walk away. Don’t listen to them! You will need to add milk or buttermilk instead. This will result in a higher fat content, which means, guess what, thicker, fluffier pancakes.
Another tip we can give you is to use a little melted butter, this will add a lot more flavor to the box mix, as sometimes these can be a little dry and bland. With a little bit of butter, you can create softer, fluffy pancakes, with a lot more taste to enjoy.
Finally, your pancake box mix may sometimes contain dry egg, which is a good thing, but you are better off adding an extra, real egg, as this will improve the taste, fluffiness and texture of your pancakes once they are cooked.
Also, you can add a little more baking powder, even though the box may say they already included a leavening agent, this is just so you can really get that extra fluffiness that you desire.
Things To Avoid When Making Fluffy Pancakes
If you want to make only the best pancakes, then there are a few mistakes that you will want to avoid making! For instance, we cannot recommend it enough, that you do not overmix the pancake mixture or batter.
You do need your pancakes to be free of lumps, but if you spend too much time overmixing the batter, you will be left with no air bubbles in your pancakes, which means they will be flat, and may deflate when cooking.
Therefore, you will need some air bubbles in your pancakes if you want that scrummy fluffy texture!
Also, you will want a hot pan to start with, as the high temperature will jump start your pancakes, and get all of those ingredients working together to react with the batter.
However, do not let your pan get too hot, or you may burn your pancakes, which nobody wants. Just look for that happy medium in between, and you should be good to go.
