Allow sliced cucumbers to sit in salt for 30-40 minutes. Drain and pat dry.
Add the cucumbers along with fresh dill and garlic to a jar.
Heat the vinegar, water, sugar and spices until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Pour the warm pickling liquid over the cucumbers in the jar.
Top your cheeseburger with your homemade pickles, and you’ll see why you went to the trouble of making your own!
2. Caramelized Onions
If you’re looking for a sweet, rich addition to your burger, these caramelized onions are a winner every time.
Simply add butter to a pan, add chopped onions, and cook on a low heat until they become soft.
This process can take anywhere from 20 to 25 minutes, so have patience! Add some water if necessary to keep the onions from burning.
Add a generous portion of fried onions on top of your burger. Delicious.
3. Bacon
It’s rare to find a burger that doesn’t work well with bacon, and it’s easy to see why!
Adding good quality smoked bacon that has been fried until it is almost crispy is an excellent addition to your burger.
Simply fry smoky rashers of bacon in oil for 3 to 4 minutes on each side.
Layer it up on a cheese burger and you’ll have a rich meal that is nothing short of heavenly!
4. Cheese
There’s no denying that cheese is the ultimate topping when it comes to making your own burgers at home. You just can’t beat the humble cheeseburger!
This recipe uses classic American cheese, but the variety of cheese available is almost overwhelming!
I also love to use Monterey Jack, and of course, cheddar cheese!
Simply add a few slices of cheese onto your burger, allow to melt, and enjoy!
5. Lettuce
Many would argue that a burger isn’t a burger without fresh, crunchy lettuce.
Lettuce can really lift a dense and meaty burger, adding another layer of texture and a delicious, refreshing crunch as you bite through.
I personally love adding crunchy mini iceberg lettuce to my burgers, as it fits perfectly into the majority of burgers.
Bunless burgers are becoming all the rage. For a healthier burger, why not try eating the burger protein style by using the crunchy lettuce leaves as an alternative to the bun?
6. Condiments
When it comes to choosing the sauce for your burger, you can’t beat a good homemade burger sauce.
This sauce contains mayo, ketchup, pickle juice, mustard, onion powder, sugar, and salt. It takes your burger to the next level.
If you’d prefer to keep your condiments simple, you also can’t beat the classics like mayo, mustard, and ketchup when constructing your burger!
7. Jalapeño Chili
If you’re looking for a burger with a kick of spice, then why not try topping your burger with jalapeños.
Adding some chopped jalapeños to your burger works to cut through the heavy meats and cheeses. They offer that perfect touch of tanginess to take your plain cheeseburger to another level.
This delicious recipe uses Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese that is melted, and perfectly complements the warmth and spice that the jalapeños bring.
8. Tomato
A tomato can be a controversial ingredient to add to a burger depending on your preferences, but I absolutely love them as a burger topping.
You’d be surprised how much of a difference adding a slice of tomato makes! Not only does a fresh slice of tomato bring a pop of color to your burger, but it also adds a layer of juicy freshness to counteract the richness of the meat.
A burger isn’t complete without a tomato!
9. Coleslaw
A barbeque isn’t complete without a bowl of homemade coleslaw, and it couldn’t be more delicious as a topping for your burger!
While you can buy coleslaw at the store, this homemade recipe takes it to the next level!

In a separate bowl, mix the mayonnaise, yogurt and mustard, season to taste, then stir into the cabbage mixture.

10. Fried Egg
You might associate fried egg with breakfast dishes, but adding a fried egg to your burger is an absolute game changer!
Simply drizzle some olive oil into a pan and fry the egg until the whites are firm but the yolk is still runny.
Cooking the egg this way will mean that the yolk adds a deliciously rich flavor, while oozing all over the rest of the ingredients in the burger! It doesn’t get much better.
11. Mac And Cheese
Mac and cheese is an all time favorite, but mac and cheese as a topping in a burger is the ultimate.
Simply boil the macaroni in salted water. To make the roux, melt butter in the pan before adding flour and whisk to combine.
Slowly pour in the milk whilst whisking constantly to avoid lumps occurring Stir in pepper, salt and paprika. Stir in a good handful of cheddar cheese. Add the cooked pasta to the white sauce, add to a baking dish, top with cheese, and bake.
Assemble the burgers loading each burger with the meat and then the mac n cheese!
12. Avocado
Avocado is a delicious and creamy addition to any burger, and they’re also super balanced!
Avocados are so creamy and decadent, yet include the fats that are actually vital to a healthy diet.

Simply halve and remove the pit from an avocado. Peel each half.
Add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice over each half, and add to your burger when constructing them!
13. Mushrooms
If you’re a big fan of mushrooms, they make a super delicious addition to your burger as a topping!
Add the mushrooms and dry-sauté them until they release their water, about 2-3 minutes.
Add the onions and the olive oil, toss to combine and continue to sauté over high heat for 1 minute.
Add salt to taste and cook until the onions soften and begin to brown. Remove the skillet from heat and transfer the mushrooms to a bowl.
14. Pineapple
Pineapple is a controversial ingredient on pizza, but what about adding this juicy fruit to your burger for a sweet and salty combination?
Grill your pineapple with your beef patties until it is nice and charred.
Construct your burger, top with charred pineapple, and you’re good to go!
15. Onion Rings
It doesn’t get much more indulgent than burgers topped with homemade onion rings.
Simply combine flour with the cayenne and season generously with salt and pepper. In another shallow bowl, whisk the buttermilk with a generous pinch each of salt and pepper.
Dredge the onion rings in the seasoned flour. Dip the rings in the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off, then dredge again in the flour. Fry the rings until golden brown and crisp, drain on paper towels and season with salt.
Serve on top of your burgers!
16. Kimchi
Kimchi is a Korean spicy, fermented cabbage, flavored with garlic, ginger, and chilis – and works super well as a burger topping.
Much like pickles, kimchi can give your burger a tangy kick that cuts through the rich meat.
If you want an Asian-inspired, pungent burger, go with a big spoonful of kimchi.
17. Cheese Curds
If you’re looking for a super indulgent burger topping, cheese curds make an excellent addition.

Coat 8-10 cheese curds with batter. Add the battered cheese curds into the oil and cook.
This recipe features lean beef burgers, crispy iceberg lettuce and is topped with cheese curds, crispy ham, and ketchup.
Naturally, this isn’t the healthiest recipe, but is delicious to enjoy as a treat every now and then!
18. Crab & Cocktail Sauce
If you’re feeling seafood in your burger, try adding a coastal twist by topping it with chunky crabmeat!
The succulent crab will ensure your burger is succulent with a bright pop of flavor, all while tasting and feeling like a total treat to eat.
Serve your crab meat with a generous helping of cocktail sauce, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Delicious!
19. Maple Syrup And Bacon Burger
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, why not make a burger with a combination of the two? This maple syrup and bacon burger is sure to impress.
Streaky bacon works best for this burger. Simply lay your bacon out on a baking sheet, and brush them with a generous helping of maple syrup.

To make hummus, simply add chickpeas and minced garlic to the bowl of a food processor. Puree until a smooth, powder-like mixture forms. While it is blending, add ice cubes, tahini, salt, and lemon juice.
Top your burger with melted cheese, caramelized onions, fiery rocket, and a generous dollop of hummus!
It couldn’t be simpler and more delicious!

25. Buffalo Blue Cheese
Although blue cheese is often seen as a controversial ingredient, if you’re willing to give it a go, buffalo blue cheese makes a tasty topping.
